The news
Spotify (SPOT) is getting more serious about selling software to other companies. On October 8, 2026, it launched technology.spotify.com, a website that brings together the developer and engineering tools it sells to businesses, TechCrunch reported.
The lineup includes Backstage, the developer portal framework Spotify open-sourced in 2020; Portal, a managed enterprise version of Backstage sold since 2024; Confidence, a platform for running software experiments such as A/B tests, sold since 2023; and Xirp, a tool for managing AI coding agents that Spotify began selling in 2026, according to TechCrunch. An internal developer portal is a central hub where engineers find services, documentation and tools.
Tyson Singer, Spotify's senior vice president of technology and platform, said in announcing the site that behind the consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code every day, TechCrunch reported. Spotify said its tools are built to be ready for AI agents.
The site does not list prices. Companies fill out a contact form to start a sales conversation, and Spotify does not disclose how much revenue its enterprise business brings in, according to TechCrunch. The company has 777 million monthly active users on its consumer service.
The numbers
- Spotify monthly active users
- 777 million
- Backstage adopters (as of May 2025)
- 2 million developers at 3,400 organizations
- Backstage open-sourced
- 2020
- Enterprise revenue
- Not disclosed
Why CEOs should care
For CTOs and platform engineering leaders, this adds a well-known name to the internal developer portal market, but with a twist. Backstage is open source, so the question is whether paying for Portal, the managed version, costs less than running Backstage yourselves. Ask for total cost comparisons that include the engineers you would otherwise assign to maintaining it.
For buyers, Spotify's lack of public pricing means negotiation leverage matters. Request reference customers of a similar size, service-level commitments and data handling terms in writing. Because enterprise software is a small side business for Spotify, also ask how long it commits to supporting each product and what happens to your data if a product is discontinued.
For CIOs managing AI coding tools, Xirp is worth a look as a sign of where the market is heading: tools to oversee many AI agents writing code, not just the agents themselves. Whatever vendor you choose, insist on audit logs showing what each agent changed and who approved it.
The bigger picture
Backstage already has wide reach. As of May 2025, 2 million developers at 3,400 organizations had adopted it, including Airbnb, LinkedIn, Twilio and American Airlines, TechCrunch reported at the time. Singer said then that Spotify wanted to build a healthy business on top of the project. Portal became generally available in October 2025 with Confidence bundled in, SD Times reported.
Spotify joins other consumer and retail companies that have turned internal tooling into products, much as Amazon built its cloud business. The difference is scale: Spotify has kept the effort informal until now.
What’s next
Watch for Spotify to name enterprise customers, publish pricing or break out enterprise revenue in its financial reports. Any of those would signal the company sees this as a growth line rather than a side project.
What “Fact-checked” means
Fact-checking means testing a story’s facts against the evidence before it is published. This story went through at least two separate checks before this version was published.
- What we checked
- Its names, figures, dates, job titles, quotes and who said what were checked against the story’s sources, including its main source where it could be opened. The headline was checked for accuracy and overstatement.
- How
- A first check reviewed the whole story. If it passed, a second, skeptical check went back to the sources to look for mistakes in the most important facts. If a check flagged the story, it was edited to fix the problems found, and a separate re-check then reviewed the whole story again.
- Who
- The checks are made by our newsroom, as steps kept separate from the writing, under rules set by our editor, Hussein Mukhtar. A story the checks still flag is held for the editor, who decides whether it is fixed, published or dropped.
- If something is wrong
- “Fact-checked” does not mean error-free. If a material error is found after publication, we correct the story and add a note saying what changed. Report an error
