How we calculated this
Figures in USD billions from each company's latest 10-Q or 10-K balance sheet on SEC EDGAR (balance-sheet dates 2026-06-27 to 2026-08-31, so periods differ). Total debt = short-term borrowings/commercial paper + current portion of long-term debt + long-term debt, at carrying value. Lease obligations are not counted as debt: operating leases are excluded for all, and finance leases for all except IBM, whose reported debt includes them (and its financing arm's debt). Leases are large for some companies, e.g. Microsoft's finance leases of about $66.6 billion. Cash & investments = cash and cash equivalents + marketable debt securities/short-term investments (plus Apple's non-current marketable securities); equity stakes and non-marketable investments are excluded. Net debt = total debt minus cash & investments; a negative value means net cash. Each figure was taken from XBRL company facts and checked against the filing's rendered balance sheet.
