Omada buys EmpowerID to govern AI agents alongside human users
The identity-governance vendor adds runtime controls for autonomous agents, but has not said how EmpowerID’s own product line will be handled.

The news
Omada, an identity governance and administration (IGA) software company, said on September 24 that it has acquired EmpowerID, a vendor it describes as a pioneer in AI agent governance. Financial terms were not disclosed. Investment bank Stephens advised on the deal.
Omada said EmpowerID’s technology will be integrated into its platform to govern human, machine and AI agent identities under one lifecycle and access-management system. The main addition is runtime authorization: checking and enforcing what an agent may do at the moment it acts, rather than only during periodic access reviews. Omada’s chief executive said the company can now stop agents “the moment they step outside the lines.”
EmpowerID CEO and co-founder Patrick Parker joins Omada as chief innovation officer to lead the integration. The deal follows Omada’s launch of an Agent Governance product in June.
Analyst firm KuppingerCole said the deal also gives Omada faster connector building and a path into policy-based and privileged access management. But it noted that the two vendors overlap in core IGA and take different approaches — Omada favors standardized defaults, EmpowerID heavy customization — and that customers of each will want to know which path their deployment is on.
Why CEOs should care
Most companies already pay for governance of employee access. Agents that read records, file tickets and move money are now being treated as a separate identity population — and vendors are positioning to charge for governing them. Before buying a new tool, ask your existing IGA, IAM and ITSM vendors what agent controls they already include, and whether agent identities will be billed per identity, per action or as a flat add-on.
EmpowerID customers face classic post-acquisition risk. Omada has not said whether EmpowerID will continue as a standalone product or be folded into Omada’s platform. Get written commitments on support timelines, preservation of custom configurations and renewal pricing before signing any multi-year extension.
What's next
Watch for Omada to publish a product roadmap for EmpowerID customers and to say whether agent governance will be sold as a separate module or included in existing IGA subscriptions.
