The news
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Space on September 29, 2026, at its DevDay conference in San Francisco, adding shared workspaces, a document type called Pages and collaborative slides that TechCrunch said resemble an office suite, putting OpenAI up against its partner Microsoft (MSFT).
Space is a shared workspace where coworkers, ChatGPT and Dots, OpenAI's new always-on agents, work from the same files and context. It replaces ChatGPT's existing Library for Pro, Business and Enterprise users and holds Pages, files, presentations and spreadsheets, VentureBeat reported. Space is launching on the web and desktop apps, with mobile to follow, according to Engadget and The Decoder.
CEO Sam Altman compared Space to a drive during his presentation, adding that "spaces feel alive," TechCrunch reported. He said users can give a page instructions, such as checking a team channel and updating the page with what it finds.
Pages is OpenAI's new document format, which the company says is built for collaboration between people and agents. Users can write, research, generate charts, create images and visualize data, then invite colleagues to edit. TechCrunch described it as OpenAI's apparent answer to Google Docs and Microsoft Word. VentureBeat reported that Pages can stay synchronized with connected tools, so a project page could pull action items from Slack, email and calendars, and several employees with edit access can work on one page at once.
Collaborative slides, which can be generated by describing them in ChatGPT and then edited and commented on by people and agents, will roll out in the coming weeks, an OpenAI representative told TechCrunch. Engadget and The Decoder reported that the slides can be exported to PowerPoint and Google Slides. VentureBeat said collaborative spreadsheets are also coming.
OpenAI also put ChatGPT inside Slack and Microsoft Teams for Business and Enterprise plans, where team members can mention @ChatGPT without their own ChatGPT license, The Decoder reported. A Meetings plugin writes notes and summaries with action items into a Space and, OpenAI says, deletes the audio once notes are generated. It starts in beta on the macOS desktop app for Pro and Business users.

Why CEOs should care
For CIOs, ChatGPT Space is a new line in the software-consolidation review. Many companies pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and separately for ChatGPT seats. If Space, Pages and slides cover enough daily document work, some teams will ask why they need both; if they fall short, OpenAI becomes one more place where company files live. Before renewals, map which groups would actually move work into Space and which pieces, such as spreadsheets, are still missing.
For procurement leads, the launch is leverage in both directions. Microsoft and other software companies have been releasing a stream of AI products of their own, TechCrunch noted, and OpenAI is now selling workplace tools around its assistant. Ask incumbents how their AI pricing compares, and ask OpenAI what Space, Pages and slides cost on each plan, how exports to PowerPoint and Google Slides hold up, and what happens to content if you leave.
For CISOs and compliance teams, read the sharing rules closely. VentureBeat reported that administrators' existing sharing rules still apply and that files uploaded into a Page inherit its permissions. But anything copied or summarized onto a shared Page is visible to everyone with access, and if ChatGPT pulls something from a user's personal memory onto a Page, collaborators can see it. OpenAI says it does not train on Business or Enterprise workspace data by default. Set data-classification guidance before teams build shared Pages with agents.
The bigger picture
The launch sharpens an awkward partnership. TechCrunch described OpenAI as a close Microsoft partner that is increasingly going after workplace software, a mainstay of Microsoft's business. The Decoder argued the DevDay announcements put OpenAI on a collision course with Slack, Notion and Google Workspace, and ultimately Microsoft Office. OpenAI has tried collaboration before: The Decoder noted it shut down shared chats between multiple users in July, saying it wanted to keep ChatGPT simpler.
The tools also feed OpenAI's wider enterprise push. At DevDay it launched an OpenAI Marketplace with 32 partners, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce and ServiceNow, where enterprise customers can redirect part of their OpenAI spend to approved partner software, and Sign in with ChatGPT, which lets Plus and Pro users spend their quota at 16 partner services, The Decoder reported.
What’s next
Watch for collaborative slides to arrive, a date for collaborative spreadsheets, the mobile version of Space and plan-by-plan pricing. Also watch Microsoft's response; the two companies are still working together, with OpenAI integrating its specialist Dots into Microsoft Agent 365, VentureBeat reported.
What “Fact-checked” means
Fact-checking means testing a story’s facts against the evidence before it is published. This story went through at least two separate checks before this version was published.
- What we checked
- Its names, figures, dates, job titles, quotes and who said what were checked against the story’s sources, including its main source where it could be opened. The headline was checked for accuracy and overstatement.
- How
- A first check reviewed the whole story. If it passed, a second, skeptical check went back to the sources to look for mistakes in the most important facts. If a check flagged the story, it was edited to fix the problems found, and a separate re-check then reviewed the whole story again.
- Who
- The checks are made by our newsroom, as steps kept separate from the writing, under rules set by our editor, Hussein Mukhtar. A story the checks still flag is held for the editor, who decides whether it is fixed, published or dropped.
- If something is wrong
- “Fact-checked” does not mean error-free. If a material error is found after publication, we correct the story and add a note saying what changed. Report an error
