The news
On September 16, 2026, Amazon.com (AMZN) said Amazon minimum starting pay for U.S. full-time core operations employees would rise $1 to $20 an hour, part of more than $1.5 billion it is investing in higher pay for those workers.
Amazon said many core operations roles required no prior experience. The Associated Press described them as jobs such as packing and shipping orders and reported that the raise would take effect starting September 27. Amazon said the $1-an-hour increase applied across the board for eligible employees and would take average hourly pay for the group to nearly $24. Including the value of benefits, the company put average total compensation at more than $32 an hour.
Amazon also added two benefits. Starting October 1, 2026, every U.S. Amazon employee would get an uncapped 10% discount on eligible groceries and everyday essentials bought on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online, and 20% off in Whole Foods stores, which can be combined with Prime member discounts. A benefit called Day 1 Financial would give qualified employees and their families lifetime membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union, with no overdraft or monthly maintenance fees on standard accounts. Amazon said access will begin rolling out in late 2026 and become broadly available in 2027.
The details came in a blog post by Udit Madan, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide operations. Madan wrote that minimum starting pay had risen more than 17% over the prior three years and that an annual step plan raised pay during an employee's first three years. Existing benefits included health coverage from $5 a week and prepaid tuition of up to $5,250 a year through the Career Choice program.
The AP set the raise against Walmart (WMT). According to Walmart, as cited by the AP, starting pay for its hourly store workers was $14 and its U.S. hourly employees averaged more than $18.50. The AP reported that Walmart's warehouse and other supply network workers averaged $27.50 an hour, with an average starting wage of $24.75.

Why CEOs should care
For operations and HR leaders who hire warehouse, logistics and frontline staff, Amazon's $20 floor takes effect just before peak-season hiring. Benchmark your starting and average rates against Amazon's $20 minimum and nearly $24 average, and against the Walmart supply-chain figures the AP cited. In markets where you compete with large Amazon sites, watch whether applicant flow or acceptance rates change after September 27.
For CFOs, the competitive number is total compensation, not just the hourly rate. Amazon put its package at more than $32 an hour with benefits, and its new perks lean on its own grocery business and a partner credit union rather than on cash alone. Ask what your fully loaded hourly cost is, which benefits workers actually use, and whether 2027 budgets assume the wage floor keeps rising.
For boards and companies that buy logistics services, higher frontline pay across the sector can show up in what carriers and third-party logistics providers charge. Ask partners how wage changes are reflected in rate cards and contract escalators, and whether they expect staffing gaps during the holiday peak.
The bigger picture
Amazon raised pay in a cautious hiring market. On September 23, 2026, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas said retailers added 461,500 seasonal jobs in the fourth quarter of 2025, the lowest seasonal gain since 2008, and forecast about 450,000 for 2026. It said transportation and warehousing added 266,500 positions in the fourth quarter of 2025, the lowest fourth-quarter total since 2018.
Employers are also competing on perks tied to everyday costs. The AP noted that Walmart expanded its 10% employee discount in 2025 to cover nearly all grocery purchases; Amazon's new discount is 10% online and 20% in Whole Foods stores.
What happened next
Amazon gave September 27, 2026, as the start date for the raise, according to the AP, and October 1 for the grocery discount. On September 23, Challenger, Gray & Christmas said Amazon had held seasonal hiring at 250,000 in each of the past three years, typically announces its plan in mid-October, and had not yet announced a 2026 figure.
Watch for Amazon's holiday hiring announcement and any seasonal pay rates it discloses, the rollout of Day 1 Financial from late 2026, and whether rivals competing for warehouse and delivery workers adjust their starting wages before the peak.
What “Fact-checked” means
Fact-checking means testing a story’s facts against the evidence before it is published. This story went through at least two separate checks before this version was published.
- What we checked
- Its names, figures, dates, job titles, quotes and who said what were checked against the story’s sources, including its main source where it could be opened. The headline was checked for accuracy and overstatement.
- How
- A first check reviewed the whole story. If it passed, a second, skeptical check went back to the sources to look for mistakes in the most important facts. If a check flagged the story, it was edited to fix the problems found, and a separate re-check then reviewed the whole story again.
- Who
- The checks are made with our newsroom’s technology tools, as steps kept separate from the writing, under rules set by our editor, Hussein Mukhtar. A story the checks still flag is not published automatically; it is held for the editor, who decides whether it is fixed, published or dropped.
- Archive story
- It was written after the event. Its dates were checked against the date of the event, including the dates of any later developments it reports.
- If something is wrong
- “Fact-checked” does not mean error-free. If a material error is found after publication, we correct the story and add a note saying what changed. Report an error
