The news
On August 31, 2026, OpenAI said its ChatGPT Ads run rate had reached $1 billion in annualized revenue less than 200 days after the ad business launched, and it opened self-service ad buying across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
In its announcement, OpenAI said tens of thousands of advertisers now use the platform and that ChatGPT Ads were available in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team and agency and technology partners. It said advertisers outside the United States account for a growing share of revenue, and that it now works with more than 50 technology and measurement partners.
OpenAI said the launch of Ads Manager, its self-service buying tool, in May opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses, which it said now represent a material share of the business. It said cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding account for most campaigns. As evidence of results, it cited one e-commerce advertiser that achieved a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days.
An annualized run rate multiplies current monthly revenue by 12, so it reflects present performance rather than confirmed bookings, Trending Topics noted, citing Digiday. OpenAI's post did not state how much ad revenue it had actually collected.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in February, CNBC reported, and the ads appear for users of its free tier and its Go plan. OpenAI said ads are clearly labeled, do not influence ChatGPT's answers, and that advertisers do not receive users' private conversations. Its ads system uses the context of the current conversation and, depending on country and user settings, context from a user's broader ChatGPT activity.
CNBC reported that OpenAI is under pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation ahead of an expected initial public offering, and that the company presented the milestone as proof of a diversified business model. Independent performance data was limited: Trending Topics reported that an Adthena analysis found a 0.91% click-through rate for one brand, about seven times below a 6.4% Google search benchmark in the same sector.

Why CEOs should care
For chief marketing officers, ChatGPT is now a paid channel with self-service buying, cost-per-click bidding and conversion tracking, reaching people while they compare options. That makes it worth a controlled test, not a budget shift. Ask OpenAI or your agency for conversion data you can reconcile with your own analytics, a holdout test to measure sales you would not otherwise have won, and a clear view of which conversation topics your ads can appear next to.
For CFOs, treat the $1 billion figure as a speed reading, not a revenue line. It shows how quickly OpenAI can turn free users into income, which matters to anyone relying on OpenAI as a long-term supplier or weighing its expected IPO. What it does not show yet is ad pricing, retention or margins, and OpenAI's post gave none of them.
For CIOs and CISOs, the detail that matters is who sees ads. OpenAI says ads run only on the Free and Go plans and use conversation context for targeting. Staff who use personal free accounts for work are therefore in an ad-supported product that uses conversation context to pick ads, even though OpenAI says advertisers never see the conversations. That is one more reason to move work use onto managed business plans with ad-free terms.
The bigger picture
Advertising has long funded Google and Meta, and CNBC noted that Anthropic mocked OpenAI's ad plans in its first Super Bowl campaign. OpenAI now lists advertising as one of four revenue pillars, alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise sales and usage-based APIs. As more product research starts in chatbots, advertisers that rely on search ads face a new, still-unproven place to compete for the same customers.
What happened next
On September 16, 2026, OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents with select U.S. advertisers, letting users who click an ad chat with a business-sponsored agent, and launched ChatGPT Ads integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. On September 23, it expanded ChatGPT Ads to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, saying the product was then available in more than 60 countries.
The next test is disclosure. CNBC reported that OpenAI confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June; a public filing could give investors a fuller view of ad revenue and margins.
What “Fact-checked” means
Fact-checking means testing a story’s facts against the evidence before it is published. This story went through at least two separate checks before this version was published.
- What we checked
- Its names, figures, dates, job titles, quotes and who said what were checked against the story’s sources, including its main source where it could be opened. The headline was checked for accuracy and overstatement.
- How
- A first check reviewed the whole story. If it passed, a second, skeptical check went back to the sources to look for mistakes in the most important facts. If a check flagged the story, it was edited to fix the problems found, and a separate re-check then reviewed the whole story again.
- Who
- The checks are made with our newsroom’s technology tools, as steps kept separate from the writing, under rules set by our editor, Hussein Mukhtar. A story the checks still flag is not published automatically; it is held for the editor, who decides whether it is fixed, published or dropped.
- Archive story
- It was written after the event. Its dates were checked against the date of the event, including the dates of any later developments it reports.
- If something is wrong
- “Fact-checked” does not mean error-free. If a material error is found after publication, we correct the story and add a note saying what changed. Report an error
