The news
On July 15, 2026, Amazon (AMZN) said its AWS compute chief, Dave Brown, would leave after nearly 19 years. Dave Treadwell, Amazon's retail technology chief, was named to lead AWS Compute and ML Services from August 1, a unit central to AWS's AI business.
AWS Chief Executive Matt Garman announced the change in a note to employees that Amazon published on its news site the same day, together with messages from both executives. Garman said Brown had decided to take a new role outside the company and would stay until the end of July to work alongside Treadwell during the handover. The memo did not name Brown's next employer, and the published notes did not say who would take over Treadwell's previous job.
Brown's career tracks the growth of AWS's core business. In his note, he said he started as a developer on EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud, the AWS service that rents out virtual servers), and Garman traced his path from Cape Town to Seattle. According to CNBC, Brown's remit later grew to include compute and machine learning services such as Bedrock and SageMaker, and he sat on Chief Executive Andy Jassy's S-team, which CNBC described as a group of 28 top executives.
Treadwell comes from the retail side of Amazon. He had been senior vice president of the eCommerce Foundation, the group that runs Amazon.com's technology platform. Garman said he had worked alongside Treadwell on the S-team for the past five years and that many AWS employees knew Treadwell as one of their "largest, and most vocal customers."
In a profile Amazon published on July 16, 2026, the company said Treadwell spent 27 years at Microsoft, where he was among a small group of engineers working on early Windows, before joining Amazon in 2016 after a meeting with then-retail chief Jeff Wilke. The profile said he led site availability for Prime Day and worked to cut infrastructure costs for Amazon's stores business. Treadwell told Amazon he sees the shift to AI as the biggest technology turning point of his lifetime.

Why CEOs should care
For enterprise buyers, the unit changing hands includes EC2, the core AWS server-rental service, and, according to CNBC, machine learning platforms such as Bedrock and SageMaker. A new leader can reset priorities. Customers with capacity reservations, GPU or accelerator commitments, or migration plans tied to specific instance families should ask their account teams whether roadmaps, allocation rules and launch dates are unchanged, and get any commitments in writing.
For CFOs, Treadwell's record points toward cost discipline. In Amazon's profile, he highlighted a long effort to build processes that reduced infrastructure costs for the stores business, mechanisms he said are still in use. Finance leaders with large AWS commitments should watch whether that focus shows up in pricing, savings plans or instance options over the coming quarters, and time renewal talks with that in mind.
For CIOs and boards, the lesson is about concentration and continuity. Treadwell's background is in running one of the largest applications on AWS as a customer rather than selling cloud services, and Garman framed that experience as an asset. Boards of companies that rely heavily on one cloud provider for AI workloads should ask management how exposed they are to shifts in that provider's leadership, capacity priorities or product direction, and what the fallback plan is.
The bigger picture
The handover came as the largest cloud providers compete hard for AI workloads. CNBC reported that AWS revenue grew 28% in the first quarter of 2026 and noted that Microsoft and Google have also benefited from a surge in AI spending. In an opinion column for The Register, AWS commentator Corey Quinn called Brown's exit a major loss, pointing to his deep knowledge of EC2, and argued that GPU capacity allocation and a sprawl of 1,354 EC2 instance types in one region were problems a newcomer from retail would recognize.
What happened next
Reports soon filled in Brown's destination. On July 17, 2026, AI Weekly, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that he would join Meta Platforms' (META) infrastructure organization to help expand its data centers and build a project called Meta Compute. Parameter reported the same day that he would report to Meta infrastructure chief Santosh Janardhan and that Meta declined to comment. Amazon's memos did not confirm the move.
On July 30, 2026, Amazon reported that AWS segment sales rose 37% to $42.2 billion in the second quarter, and said AWS's AI business and Amazon's chips business had each passed a $25 billion annual revenue run rate. Amazon guided third-quarter operating income of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion. The third-quarter report, which will cover Treadwell's first two months in the job, will give the first read on AWS under its new compute leadership.
What “Fact-checked” means
Fact-checking means testing a story’s facts against the evidence before it is published. This story went through at least two separate checks before this version was published.
- What we checked
- Its names, figures, dates, job titles, quotes and who said what were checked against the story’s sources, including its main source where it could be opened. The headline was checked for accuracy and overstatement.
- How
- A first check reviewed the whole story. If it passed, a second, skeptical check went back to the sources to look for mistakes in the most important facts. If a check flagged the story, it was edited to fix the problems found, and a separate re-check then reviewed the whole story again.
- Who
- The checks are made with our newsroom’s technology tools, as steps kept separate from the writing, under rules set by our editor, Hussein Mukhtar. A story the checks still flag is not published automatically; it is held for the editor, who decides whether it is fixed, published or dropped.
- Archive story
- It was written after the event. Its dates were checked against the date of the event, including the dates of any later developments it reports.
- If something is wrong
- “Fact-checked” does not mean error-free. If a material error is found after publication, we correct the story and add a note saying what changed. Report an error
