On September 9, 2026, Apple (AAPL) unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at a US starting price of $1,999. It also introduced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which start at $1,199 and $1,299.
New CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1, introduced the lineup at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, the Associated Press reported. The AP said the Duo's starting price makes it the most expensive iPhone yet.
Closed, the Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer display. Opened, it has a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple said is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen, and both screens share the same aspect ratio so content scales between them. It runs on the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process and shared with the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple said the hinge uses more than 100 components, and that the phone is eSIM-only worldwide and uses Touch ID in the side button. Storage runs from 256GB to 2TB.
The Duo brings Split View to the iPhone for the first time, letting two apps run side by side, and can open two windows of the same app. Apple said developers can adapt their apps with new and updated APIs in its latest software development kits, and that Netflix, Zoom and Slack were already taking advantage of the new format. Apple also said the Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later in the year.
Apple set Duo preorders for October 16 and availability for October 23 in more than 70 countries, with 28 more following on October 30. iPhone 18 Pro preorders were set for September 12 and sales for September 18. The AP reported that the iPhone 18 costs about $100 more than earlier generations, partly because of a global memory chip shortage.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told the AP there is certain to be demand for the Duo, which costs less than some analysts had expected, but that foldables still account for less than 5% of the overall smartphone market. Samsung, Motorola and Google already sell foldable phones.

Why CEOs should care

Apps built around a single full-screen window will now run next to other apps and resize as the phone folds. For CIOs and enterprise mobility teams, the Duo is a new $1,999 device class to approve, restrict or ignore. It is eSIM-only, which changes how phones are provisioned with carriers, and it authenticates with Touch ID in the side button, which security teams should check against their biometric policies. Because Split View puts two apps on one screen, ask your mobile device management vendor how managed and personal apps behave side by side before allowing the device. Global fleets should also note that Apple said its Siri AI features will not be initially available on iOS in the EU.
For CFOs, the AP's report that the iPhone 18 costs about $100 more than earlier generations, partly because of a memory chip shortage, is a signal to revisit device refresh budgets for 2027. Boards should see the Duo as a test of whether Apple can grow a category that still accounts for a small share of phone sales.
The bigger picture
Ternus led the launch eight days after taking over as CEO, and it moved Apple into a form factor its rivals already sell. The Duo shares its chip with the iPhone 18 Pro, and Apple pitched the larger screen for multitasking as well as entertainment. With foldables below 5% of the market by CCS Insight's estimate, Apple's entry at $1,999 will show whether a premium brand can expand a niche category or mainly move existing iPhone buyers up the price ladder.
