On August 25, 2026, Apple (AAPL) introduced the Apple M6 chip, its first built on a 2-nanometer process, and M5 Ultra, its first four-die chip, in a new Mac mini and Mac Studio pitched for running large AI models on the machine itself.
M6 pairs a 12-core CPU, made up of two new super cores for single-threaded work, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, with a 12-core GPU that includes Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, Apple's dedicated AI block. It supports up to 32GB of unified memory, the single pool shared by the CPU and GPU, at up to 170GB/s of bandwidth.
Apple said M6 delivers up to 1.2 times the multithreaded performance of M5 and nearly 30 percent more peak GPU compute for AI. The company said 32GB of memory is enough for the Mac mini to run large language models (LLMs) on the device for private AI agent tasks.
M5 Ultra uses Apple's UltraFusion interconnect to join two dual-die M5 Max chips. The result has up to 36 CPU cores (12 super cores and 24 performance cores), up to 80 GPU cores and a 32-core Neural Engine. Apple said it supports up to 512GB of unified memory with 1.2TB/s of bandwidth, 50 percent more than M3 Ultra, and claimed up to 4.5 times the peak GPU compute for AI of M3 Ultra. Apple said that memory lets users run LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on the machine.
TidBITS reported that preorders opened on August 25 with deliveries starting September 22. It listed starting prices of $899 for the M6 Mac mini, $1,699 for the M5 Pro Mac mini, $2,499 for the M5 Max Mac Studio and $5,499 for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 96GB of memory, and said 512GB configurations would not be available until October.
TidBITS writer Adam Engst summed up the update as faster but more expensive, and noted that the performance figures were Apple's marketing claims rather than independent tests.

Why CEOs should care
For technology buyers, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio is a desk-side option for teams that want to test or run open-weight models without renting cloud GPUs. The deciding spec is memory: a model has to fit in the unified memory pool to run locally, and the 512GB configuration was not due until October. Ask your machine learning staff which models you actually need, at what speed, and whether Apple's claims hold on your own workloads.
CFOs get a capital-versus-operating-cost question. Tech Times estimated that a team spending $300 to $500 a month on cloud AI API calls would recoup a $5,499 Mac Studio in 11 to 18 months on operating cost alone. That rough math leaves out staff time, power, depreciation and any quality gap between models small enough to run locally and the largest cloud models, so treat it as the basis for a pilot, not a business case.
For CISOs, local inference keeps prompts and documents on a managed device, which Apple presents as a privacy benefit. It also puts model files, plug-ins and agent permissions on endpoints that security teams must inventory, patch and monitor. Boards should ask whether AI spending plans include a hybrid path, with local hardware for sensitive or steady workloads and cloud capacity for bursts.
The bigger picture
The launch makes on-device AI the headline selling point for Apple's desktop Macs. Tech Times identified the 2nm process as TSMC's N2, which Apple's release did not name, and noted that Apple usually brings a new process to iPhone chips before Macs; M6 reversed that order. Engst, for his part, questioned Apple's agentic-computing framing, arguing most buyers will simply use the machines as ordinary Macs.
